The Three Doshas
Vata, Pitta and Kapha are the three energies that shape every body and mind. Understanding your blend is the first step in Ayurveda.
In Ayurveda, everything in nature — including you — is made of five elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. These combine into three functional energies called doshas. Each of us carries all three, but in a unique proportion that's been with us since birth. That blueprint is called your Prakriti.
The big idea: health is balance. When your doshas are in their natural proportion you feel vibrant and clear. When they drift, small imbalances appear — and Ayurveda offers gentle ways to bring you back.
Below is a quick portrait of each dosha. Most people have one or two that lead. The easiest way to find yours is to take the free quiz.
Vata
Air + Ether · The energy of movement
Vata governs all movement — breath, circulation, the nervous system and creative thought. Vata types tend to be quick, light, imaginative and enthusiastic, with bursts of energy.
In balance
- Creative & lively
- Quick to learn
- Flexible & adaptable
- Enthusiastic and joyful
Out of balance
- Anxiety or worry
- Dry skin & constipation
- Restless sleep
- Feeling scattered or cold
To stay balanced, favour
warm, moist, grounding foods, a steady daily routine, gentle oil massage and early nights.
Pitta
Fire + Water · The energy of transformation
Pitta governs digestion, metabolism and transformation — turning food, thoughts and impressions into usable energy. Pitta types are sharp, focused, ambitious and natural leaders.
In balance
- Sharp intellect
- Strong digestion
- Decisive & driven
- Warm and courageous
Out of balance
- Irritability or anger
- Acidity & heartburn
- Skin rashes or inflammation
- Overheating & perfectionism
To stay balanced, favour
cooling, sweet and bitter foods, time in nature, avoiding the midday sun and not skipping meals.
Kapha
Earth + Water · The energy of structure
Kapha governs structure, lubrication and immunity — the cohesion that holds the body together. Kapha types are calm, loving, steady and strong, with great endurance.
In balance
- Calm & grounded
- Strong & enduring
- Loving & loyal
- Steady, restful sleep
Out of balance
- Sluggishness or lethargy
- Weight gain
- Congestion & heaviness
- Resistance to change
To stay balanced, favour
light, warm, spiced foods, vigorous daily movement, new stimulation and an early, active start.
Going deeper: the sub-doshas
Vata, Pitta and Kapha are only the first layer. Each one divides into five sub-doshas (upadoshas) — finer expressions that each govern a single, specific function in the body and mind. Fifteen in all.
They matter because two people with “high Vata” can have very different experiences — one anxious and breathless, another constipated and bloated. The sub-doshas tell you which Vata is really involved, so support can be far more precise.
Vata — the five Vayus
- Prana Vayu Seated in the head and chest, the inward-moving force that governs inhalation, the senses, the mind and the heartbeat — your intake of air, food and impressions.
- Udana Vayu Rising from the throat and chest, the upward force behind exhalation, speech, effort, memory and enthusiasm.
- Samana Vayu Centred at the navel, it churns digestion — drawing in nutrients and separating waste — and balances the work of the gut.
- Apana Vayu Seated in the pelvis, the downward, outward force behind elimination, urination, menstruation, sexual function and birth.
- Vyana Vayu Radiating from the heart through the whole body, it governs circulation, movement and the spread of nourishment to every tissue.
Pitta — the five fires
- Pachaka Pitta The central digestive fire in the stomach and small intestine that breaks food down — and fuels all the other pittas.
- Ranjaka Pitta Seated in the liver, spleen and stomach, it colours plasma into healthy red blood.
- Sadhaka Pitta Working in the heart and brain, it digests thoughts and emotions — powering drive, confidence, clarity and the pursuit of your goals.
- Alochaka Pitta Located in the eyes, it governs vision and the perception of light and colour.
- Bhrajaka Pitta Held in the skin, it governs complexion, lustre and body temperature, and absorbs what is applied to the skin.
Kapha — the five waters
- Kledaka Kapha The mucous lining of the stomach that moistens and liquefies food for the first stage of digestion.
- Avalambaka Kapha Seated in the chest, it cushions and supports the heart and lungs and lubricates every breath.
- Bodhaka Kapha Saliva in the mouth and tongue that moistens food and carries the sense of taste.
- Tarpaka Kapha The cerebrospinal fluid of the brain and spine that nourishes the nervous system and steadies memory and emotion.
- Shleshaka Kapha The synovial fluid in every joint, lubricating and protecting them against wear.
